Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary, Udaipur
Located just 50 km south of Udaipur, Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary is a small but exceptionally rich bird sanctuary in Rajasthan. Set amidst picturesque surroundings of Aravalli hills and the enchantingly beautiful artificial Jaisamand Lake, Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary is home to thousands of exotic and colorful water birds, including a wide variety of migratory birds. Jaisamand Lake is the second largest artificial lake in Asia covering an area over 90 sq km and offers a breathtaking view to its visitors. Spread over an area approx. 160 sq km, Jaisamand was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1957 to protect its rich and unique wildlife and avifauna. The Jaisamand wildlife Sanctuary is famous for Darters, Open-bill Storks, Pond Herons, Little Cormorants, Indian Shags, Egrets, Eagles, Buzzards, Painted Partridges, Babblers, Hawks, Falcons, Dalmatian Pelicans and a wide variety of Ducks, including Pintails, Teals, Mallards and Shovelers. The sanctuary also shelters a sizable population of Sloth Bears, Leopards, Chitals, Chinkaras, Wild Boars and Crocodiles. Best time to visit Jaisamand wildlife Sanctuary is between November and April.
Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Located amidst rugged terrain of the Aravallis with an altitude ranging between 500 and 1,300 meters, Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for many highly endangered wildlife species. Covering an area over 578 sq km in Pali, Rajsamand and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan, the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Leopards, Sloth Bears, Flying Squirrels, Hyenas, Wolves, Four-horned Antelopes, Jackals, Jungle Cats, Sambars, Nilgai, Chinkaras and Indian Hares.
The Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is also rich in its avifauna, which includes Egrets, Flamingoes, Cormorants, Spoonbills, Gray Jungle Fowls, Peacocks, Doves, Red-spur Owls, Parakeets, Golden Orioles, Gray Pigeons and White-breasted Kingfishers. The scientifically bred Crocodiles in the lake are other wildlife attractions at the sanctuary. You can also enjoy exciting nature walks and horse safaris in the sanctuary. Best time to visit Kumbhalgarh wildlife Sanctuary is between November and April.
Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary
Located amidst scenic Vindhya Plateau, just 18 km from the town of Dholpur and 35 km from Ramsagar in eastern Rajasthan, the Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its unique flora and fauna. Once a favorite hunting ground of rulers of Dholpur, it was declared a sanctuary in 1955. Though a small sanctuary with an area of approx. 60 sq km, the Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
Among commonly found wild animals in Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary are Sambars, Chitals, Blue Bulls, Wild Boars, Sloth Bears, Hyenas, Antelopes and Leopards. It's said that Tigers also inhabited the sanctuary till the end of the nineteen sixties. The Van Vihar Sanctuary is also rich in its avifauna, which includes Cormorants, Darters, Ibis, White-Breasted Water Hens, Moorhens, Jacanas, Ringed Plovers, Sand Pipers and Herons.
