Saheliyon ki Bari
The Saheliyon ki Bari or the "garden of maidens" lies near the beautiful Fateh Sagar Lake. This pleasure garden cum summer palace was designed by Maharana Sangram Singh II in the early 18 century. It happened so that the prince had received 48 young maids and the garden as part of his dowry gift. So he set out to convert it into a pleasure retreat for the 48 young maidens.
A visit to the Saheliyon ki Bari is a must for any visitor to Udaipur. Speaking of the garden, it has a huge reservoir that is surrounded by four black marble cenotaphs. There is also one in white marble in the center. These wonderful cenotaphs are beautifully decorated with bird shaped water fountains. The sight of water gushing out in thin sprays from the beaks of the birds is indeed a wonderful sight to watch. The Saheliyon ki Bari is also adorned with four ornamental pools and five fountains. It can be mentioned that these fountains were imported from England in 1889. Maharana Bhopal Singh, one of the rulers of Udaipur was so fond of the place that he built a rain fountain that occupies the pride of place at the Saheliyon ki Bari.
The grand palace of Maharana Fateh Singh is located just beside the Saheliyon ki Bari and is a great place to explore.
