Mehrangarh Fort
The impressive Mehrangarh Fort is perched on a 125 m long hill and overlooks the regal city of Jodhpur. In fact, the fort has such a dominating presence that you simply cannot ignore it, as it looms over the walled city in its entire majestic splendor. The Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 and sprawls over an area of around 5 km. The construction of this fort was originally started by Rao Jodha but it was finally completed during the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh.
The Mehrangarh Fort had its own share of troubles when it was taken over by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. But the fort was regained by Ajit Singh (Jaswant Singh's son) and restored to its former glory. The Mehrangarh Fort houses numerous palaces, temples and well-laid gardens that are a treat to the eyes of every visitor. Deserving special mention is the Moti Mahal that is a wonderful combination of stained glass and exquisitely carved stone screens. Other beautiful attractions of the Mehrangarh Fort are the Chandan Mahal, Rang Mahal and the Darbar Takhat.
Don't forget to have a look at the massive gates that welcome you to the fort. In fact, the Mehrangarh Fort has 7 elegantly carved gates that speak a lot about their sculptor's artistic talents. You can also feast your eyes on the royal paraphernalia on display at the fort. One more reminder - do not forget to climb up the ramparts of the grand Mehrangarh Fort and treat yourself to some of the most stunning views of Jodhpur city.
